Design for London

Mies' design for a square with a high-rise furniture house in the centre of London (Mansion House Square) was completed in 1967. Mies received this offer from a London property broker Peter Palumb. The structure, however, could not be initiated prior to the year 1986 since the property was being rented up until that time. Although Mies knew that he would probably not live to see the eventual realization, he accepted this work as a challenge. In light of the location of the plot of land in the oldest part of the city and its immediate proximity to historical buildings, the project met with intense resistance in the 1980s. With the fight against the realization of this structure Prince Charles declared a campaign against Modern architecture.
