Qatar Sports City – Competition For FIFA World Cup Soccer Stadium
A competition submittal for the Qatar 2022 FIFA soccer World Cup opening and final game iconic stadium.
Drawing on the rich traditions of nomadic Bedouin “architecture” that are well adapted to their harsh Middle Eastern environment, New Sports City Stadium is a completely flexible building capable of adapting and mechanically transforming to accommodate numerous events and functions.
The large fabric roof functions as a massive “Tent” sheltering the plazas, hotel, and theater below. The “Tent” creates a “Village Square” that will be active day and night, year around.
Primarily designed as a world-class football facility, the stadium design, in its native configuration, is a 86,000-seat, fully conditioned, World Cup football stadium, with uncompromised sightlines, state of the art broadcast and media facilities, and luxurious VIP areas.
The stadium also has many kinetic building elements, including moveable seating and pitch and a retractable roof, which allow it to be configured for dozens of different sports and uses. The stadium is a fully integrated, multifunctional entertainment complex.
Michal Sedláček graduated at the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. After the Velvet Revolution, he went to the USA and established himself in the team of one of the globally most famous contemporary architects, Frank O. Gehry. He worked for Gehry for over eight years, and then founded his own architectural team with several colleagues, connected with Aedas (Aedas LA Managing Partner), based in Los Angeles and operating worldwide.
