The Eisler brothers, uncertain times 1921 – 1961

The construction company of Eisler brothers was among largest in Brno during the ‘First Republic̕ − the inter-war period. Their best-known realizations include the Villa Tugendhat (by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1930), Hotel Avion (by architect Bohuslav Fuchs, 1928), Palace Morava (by architect Ernst Wiesner, 1929). Dozens of apartment buildings and villas, now mostly listed, can be found in Brno (e.g. Villa Stiassny, known as 'government villa').

Brothers Arthur, Moritz, Otto, Hugo and Leo Eisler were born in Bystřice nad Pernštejnem and lived in Brno, but they also had a significant connection to Lomnice. They inherited and then until 1961 owned a local Jewish school opposite the synagogue. They mainly spent the weekends here and in the 1930’s they built a painting studio on the top floor. Visitors to the Jewish cemetery notice that a monument commemorating their families’Holocaust fate is located here. Otto Eisler was one of the most important architects of the modern movement period. In 1932 he was represented by two buildings in the catalogue of The International Style exhibition in New York, the most important show of the world's inter-war architecture.

The exhibition prepared by Galerie Eisler in cooperation with the ‘Okrašlovací spolek̕ association in Lomnice presents panels with photographs of buildings, examples of period furniture and lighting elements; you can also learn about the fate of the family, marked by the tragic events of the 20th century, such as the World War II, the Holocaust or the nationalization of businesses in 1948. The exhibition is prepared to mark the 120th anniversary of the birth of Otto Eisler.
