Ceremonial return of original furniture with accompanying programme and a presentation of the famous brand design presented by Vitra

Monday, 26th October will be a significant day at the Villa Tugendhat – the exhibited space will see the return of the history of the villa in the form of several original pieces of furniture from the 1930’s. On this occasion, an exhibition, "Vitra Classics" of the Swiss brand Vitra will also be inaugurated. Villa Tugendhat thus becomes a proud partner site of Designblok in Prague - an international exhibition presenting the latest news of global and domestic design.

Last year, the City of Brno purchased four original pieces of furniture from the youngest daughter of the commissioners of the villa, Daniela Hammer-Tugendhat, from the original Villa Tugendhat equipment: a sideboard, a bench, a table (coffee table) and chaise longue. This collection of furniture was declared a cultural monument in 2008.

The original furniture has in the meantime undergone essential restoration preserving its authenticity and stopping all degrading processes in materials. Now the furniture becomes part of the permanent exhibition on the technical floor of the villa, where it will be placed in a cabinet under constant supervision and modification of internal climate.

Interior and furniture created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich from the period between the wars now belong to global design icons of the 20th century. The original furniture designed and produced in the period of their cooperation is appreciated like supreme works of art. They are unique pieces that document the evolution of modern furniture design worldwide through their artistic importance.

The next section of the exhibition by the iconic Swiss brand Vitra will present products that bear the signature of top designers from around the world. The classic Lounge Chair, designed by the famous designer pair of Charles and Ray Eames, the elegant and minimalist Cité chair by French designer Jean Prouvé, the Slow Chair of the stellar Bouroullec brothers, who belong to the best designers of the present day and more iconic pieces. Visitors can look forward to ten selected chairs and accessories that have become classics and inspired many other designers in their work.
