Due to health reasons concert postponed to September 26 2016 at 19:30

The International Music Day in the Villa Tugendhat on 21 June 2016 will traditionally include a premiere of a new orchestral programme by the Brno Contemporary Orchestra. The jubilee fifth year of a regular series of concerts will be devoted to ballet, namely a creative edition of an opera by Bohuslav Martinů, A Theatre Behind the Gate. The Brno Contemporary Orchestra will perform together with Eva Štěrbová (soprano) and Tomáš Krejčí (baritone).

The ballet theme was chosen for several reasons. The first is a loose association to the letter B, which the Brno Contemporary Orchestra focuses on during the entire concert season 2016/17.

The second reason is the 80th anniversary since the premiere of the opera A Theatre Behind the Gate, whose world premiere took place in Brno in 1936. The opera also included an important part in the choreography by Ivo Váňa Psota who returned to his hometown with this project as the first dancer and head of the National Theatre’s ballet ensemble in Brno. Ivo Váňa Psota is also linked with the history of the Villa Tugendhat, since he was a frequent guest at Karla Hladká’s school of dance, which was based in the building in 1945–1950.

The contemporary treatment of the opera A Theatre Behind the Gate was specially created for the Brno Contemporary Orchestra and the space in Villa Tugendhat, and thus it is a world premiere of a chamber version for a music ensemble and two singers.
