REPLICATION

Villa Tugendhat, 17/5 – 2/7/2017

A part of an exhibition project prepared by the Brno City Museum and 4AM / Forum for Architecture and the Media, dedicated to the work of the Brno architect Jan Dvořák.

An attitude to architecture and art created during the past regime is sought by many of representatives of the present middle-aged generation of the lay and professional public with certain difficulty, notwithstanding architects. Yet at the same time, Jan Dvořák himself showed his ability in his time. During the 1960’s, he acted actively against inadequate interventions in the buildings of the Brno interwar architecture. His respect and, undoubtedly, admiration for inter-war architecture is also reflected in his personal commitment to searching for the original Villa Tugendhat furniture designed by Lilly Reich and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Original pieces of furniture and subsequent replicas will become the central theme of the exhibition and installation.

The author of the exhibition is the architect of the Brno 4 AM / Forum for Architecture and Media group, Šárka Svobodová. The exhibition in Villa Tugendhat is being prepared in cooperation with the curator of Villa Tugendhat Lucie Valdhansová, architect Jaroslav Sedlák, photographer Zdeněk Porcal and graphic designer Jozef Ondrík.

The personality of Jan Dvořák will be presented in Brno from 20 April to 2 July in three places: beside Villa Tugendhat, the largest part will be located at Špilberk Castle and another in the Prague cultural space.

On Thursday, 1 June, a lecture on Jan Dvořák will take place in the Villa Tugendhat; it will also include informal discussions with his collaborators from the Czech Institute of Industrial Design.

The exhibition is not only a part of all tours but is also accessible at any time during the opening hours without prior reservation.

The admission fee is 50 CZK (no discounts available).
